TV Dinners: Party Down

Party Down is a little bit quirky, a little absurdist, a little romantic, and a lot funny. Basically, it can be summed up by the knowledge that it aired on Starz. If it were on Showtime, you could expect more nudity. If it were on HBO, you could expect a bit more production value. If it were on network TV, you could expect it to suck just a little bit more.

Party Down follows a Hollywood catering team who would rather be anywhere else: aspiring actors, a writer, a small business owner, and Adam Scott. Halfway through you lose Jane Lynch to Glee, but she’s swapped out for the highly capable Megan Mullally, so it’s (almost) a wash. Each episode takes you to a new event (a Sweet 16; a high school reunion; an Adult Film Awards after party), hilarity ensues, etc.

Unfortunately, like many great shows before it, it was cancelled before its time. All you get are 2 tight, bizarre, hilarious seasons, which you will easily blow through in a week. Gather some friends, some DVDs, and some finger food, and try not to love this show. I dare you.
